「見る」｜「see」「look at」「watch」の違いと使い方
自然に「見る」こともあり、見ようとして「見る」こともあり、集中して「見る」こともある。英語の言い方を覚えておきましょう。
「見る」｜「see」は自然に視覚に映る
see は積極的に見る意志がなくて自然に視覚に映ることを表すときに使われる最も一般的な語。
皇居(江戸城)で。 You can see the site where there used to be buildings during the Edo period. (江戸城では江戸時代に建物があった場所を見ることができます)
ホーンテッドマンションの庭で。 Dad, I can see dead people. (お父さん、死んだ人たちが見える)
砂漠の民。 Some people have never seen the sea in their life. (生まれてこのかた海を見たことがない人もいます)
宇宙から見た一軒家で。 The old man live alone deep in the mountains and avoid seeing other people. (その老人は山奥でひっそりと世を忍ぶ生活を送っています) ※ deep in the mountains「山奥で」(前置詞 in に注意) avoid seeing other people「ひっそりと世を忍んで」(←一人で、人に会うことを避けて)
「見る」｜「look at」は見ようとして視線を向ける
look at は何かを見ようとして視線を向けることを表すときに使われる語。
疲れが取れます。 When you are worn out from working so much, look up at the stars in the heavens in the country. (仕事で疲れているときは、田舎へ行き天を仰いで満天の星を見てごらんなさい)
闇夜のカラス。 I heard a crow cawing and looked at the sky, but I saw nothing. (カラスが鳴くのを聞いて空を見上げたが何も見えませんでした) ※ crow「カラス」 caw「(カラスが)カーカー鳴く」
愛犬。 When our dog realizes she is going to be left at home, she looks at me with pitiful eyes. (我が家の犬は留守番だとわかると哀れっぽい目つきで私を見るのです)
素人にもわかります。 If you look at the falling stock prices, it is quite obvious that the economy is slowing down. (株価の下げを見れば景気の後退は一目瞭然です) stock prices「株価」 obvious「明白な、一目瞭然」
「見る」｜「watch」は注意を集中して見る
watch は動くもの、動く可能性のあるものを注意を集中して見ることを表すときに使われる語。
バードウォッチング。 From here we can watch wild birds searching about for food. (ここから餌をあさりまわる野鳥の姿を観察することができます)
1人浜辺で。 She sat on the beach and watched the sun sink beneath the horizon. (彼女は浜辺に座り太陽が水平線に沈むのを眺めました)
変化が激しい時代。 Some people have no choice but to watch the changes taking place in the situation. (時局の推移を見守ることしかない人もいます) ※ take place「起こる」
応援の仕方。 We can easily see the characteristics of a nation by watching how they cheer for their athletes at the Olympics. (オリンピックでの選手の応援を見ていると国民的特性がよくわかります) ※ characteristics「特徴、特性」 nation「国民」(この場合は「国家」ではない)
