「問題」|「problem」「issue」「subject」「question」「matter」の違いと使い方

「問題」には人の抱える日常の「問題」から国家の大事を扱う「問題」まである。

「問題」を表す英語を覚えておきましょう。

 

「問題」|「problem」は難しい事柄、論理的なこと

problem は処理、対処や理解が困難な特定の事柄を表すときに使う語。

problem は響きが否定的なので日常の英語では変わりに issue が使われることが多い。

problem は論理的思考や数学を使って解答するべき質問のことを表すときにも使われる語。

 

身体的なこと。

My brother has a slight problem with his legs. (兄はちょっと足が不自由です)

※ slight「軽微な」

 

今もある問題。

It’s a problem that in the city there aren’t many places for children to play.  (都会では子供の遊び場が少なくて困ります)

 

数学の悩み。

Which formula should I use to solve this math problem? (どの公式を当てはめるとこの数学の問題はとけるのだろうか)

※ formula「公式」

 

緊急着陸。

Due to a problem with its left wing, the airplane made an emergency landing at Narita Airport. (飛行機は左翼の故障で成田空港に緊急着陸しました)

※ make an emergency landing「緊急着陸する」

 

「問題」|「issue」は重要事項

issue は議論や討論の対象となる重要事項、特に多くの人が影響を受ける社会的、政治的問題をさすことが多い。

issue はややくだけた使い方で人が抱えている問題や心配事をさすときに使われることがある。

 

いつも議論になっています。

There’s a lack of concerted effort among the various nations in coming to terms with the issue of global warming. (地球温暖化問題への取り組みはなかなか世界各国の足並みがそろいません)

※ concerted「一斉に行われる」  effort「取り組み」

 

いつの世も同じ。

The feud between the bride and her mother-in-law is an issue that applies to all families. (嫁と姑の確執はどの家にも当てはまる問題です)

※ feud「確執」  apply to …「~に当てはまる」

 

ある国同士の話。

The two countries are of the same opinion on many of the issues. (両国は多くの点で意見が一致しています)

※ are of the the same opinion「意見が一致している」

 

「問題」|「subject」は議論、説明などの対象

subject は議論、説明、処理、表現の対象となっている話題を表すときに使う語。

 

よくある課題です。

Write a paper on the subject you are given. (与えられた主題でレポートを書きなさい)

 

問題は数々ある。

A new subject came into discussion. (新たな問題が浮かびあがりました)

 

議長の采配。

We are short of time so let’s move on to the next subject. (時間がありませんので、次に議題に移りましょう)

 

「問題」|「question」は解決・考慮すべきことや試験

question は解決や考慮を要する事柄を表すときに使う語。

question は必ずしも実用的なことだけでなく結論の出ない哲学的な問題にも用いる。

question は知識や実力を問う問題や試験の意味でも使われる語。

 

試験でよくあること。

Today’s exam was full of tricky questions. (今日の試験は間違えやすい問題ばかりだった)

※ be full of …「~で一杯、~ばかり」  tricky「間違えやすい」

 

試験のとき、

I gave up on Question 5; it was too tough for me. (5番の問題はあきらめた、私には難しすぎた)

※ tough「難しい」

 

子供は好奇心の塊。

Children at a certain stage of development like to ask questions about everything around them. (子供はある時期身の回りのものを、なんでも聞きたがるものです)

※ a certain stage「ある時期、段階」  development「発達」

 

「問題」|「matter」は考慮、処理すべきこと

matter はすこしかたい感じのする語。

matter は考慮、処理すべきことがらを表す語。しばしば実用的な場面で使われる語。

 

人の意見も必要。

The reporter asked the people concerned for their opinions on the matter. (記者はその件について関係者の意見を求めた)

※ people concerned「関係者」

 

プライバシーも大事。

It is not easy to ask about personal matters. (個人的なことは聞きにくいものだ)

 

問題はあれこれあるが、

I am reluctant to ask for the services of a lawyer in such a matter. (こんなことを弁護士に依頼するのは気がすすみません)

※ am reluctant「気が進まない」
