「最後の」｜「last」「final」「latest」の違いと使い方
順番の「最後」もあれば、仕上げ段階の「最後」もあり、最新の意味の「最後」もある。英語の言い方を覚えておきましょう。
「最後の」｜「last」は連続の終わり
last は順序の終わりで、連続の終わりにくることを表すときに使われる語。
捜査会議で。 He was the last one to enter the building. (彼がその建物に入った最後の人でした)
授業で。 On this handout is a summary of the last lesson. (このプリントには前回の授業のまとめが書かれています) ※ handout「プリント」
残業の日。 What time is the last train? (終電は何時ですか)
一年の最終日。 On the last day of the year, our family always has sukiyaki for dinner. (私の家では大晦日の夕食はいつもすき焼きです)
「最後の」｜「final」は仕上げとして最後
final は決定など最終的で、仕上げとして最後の、ということを表すときに使われる語。
家族会議中。 I am still talking with my parents about it; please give me a few more days to make the final decision. (その件については両親と相談中なので、結論はもう数日お待ちください)
期末試験。 The final examination is set for the second week of February. (期末試験の日程は２月の第２週目に決まりました)
リーグ存続。 The victory in the final game saved the soccer team from dropping into the second division. (最終戦の勝利でそのサッカーチームは降格を免れました)
決勝戦へ。 The baseball team advanced to the final by winning all four games. (その野球チームは４戦全勝で決勝に進みました)
「最後の」｜「latest」は最も現在に近い
latest は最も現在に近いことを表すときに使われる語。
新刊本。 This is his latest book. (これが彼の最近の本です)
医学の進歩。 The latest treatment cured the disease in two weeks. (最新の治療法は、その病気を２週間で直しました) ※ treatment「治療法」 cure「治す」
速報。 We now change our scheduled programming to bring you the latest news. (ここで予定を変更し、最新のニュースをお伝えします)
世論調査。 In the latest survey, the answers given by men and women were alike. (今回のアンケート調査では男女共に同じような回答になりました) ※ alike「同様で」
