「助ける」|「help」「aid」「assist」「succor」の違いと使い方
「助ける」とき、人の仕事を手伝うこともあり、救助もあり、補助もある。英語の言い方を覚えておきましょう。
「助ける」|「help」は人の仕事を手伝う
help は他の人の仕事を手伝うことを表すときに使われる語。
She helped her son with his homework. （彼女は息子の宿題を手伝ってあげました） ※ 注意!! ✖ help his homework とは言わない。
支援が必要。 We help physically disabled people find a job. （私たちは障碍者の就労を支援しています） ※ 「障害者」は「障碍者」が正しい。「害」は「碍」の書き換え。他に「妨碍→妨害」などの書き換えがある。
学生時代の経験。 When I think of it, the part-time jobs I had during my college days helped me learn a lot about the world. （今にして思えば、学生時代のアルバイトはいい社会勉強になりました） ※ world「世間、世の中」
パラサイトではありません。 She is helping her family with the income from her job. （彼女は自分も働いた収入で生計を助けています） ※ income「収入」
「助ける」|「aid」は救助が必要な人を援助
aid は（救助の必要な人を）援助することを表すときに使われる語。
He aided the college student with money and advice. （彼はその大学生のために金も与え助言もしました）
難民援助。 The organization gives full financial aid to the refugee student. (その組織は資金を全部出してその難民学生の面倒を見ています) ※ full「全部の」 financial「金銭上の」
消えた年金騒動のとき。 There was a throng of people waiting for their turn at the pension aid center of the Social Insurance Agency. (社会保険庁の年金相談窓口には順番を待つ人が目白押しでした) ※ throng「群衆」 turn「順番」 pension「年金」 Social Insurance Agency「社会保険庁」(現在は Japan Pension Service「日本年金機構」)
世界情勢の一つ。 There are countries which, in the name of aid, intervene in the internal affairs of other countries. (援助の名の下に他国の内政に干渉する国もあります) ※ in the name of …「～の名の下に」 intervene「(力・威嚇により)内政干渉をする」 internal affairs「内政」
「助ける」|「assist」は補助的に力を貸す
assist は補助的に力を貸すことを表すときに使われる語。
He assisted his daughter in writing the essay. （彼は娘が作文を書くのを手伝いました）
食事は？ Can the patient eat his meal without assistance? (その患者は介添えなしで食事ができますか)
老後の生活設計は？ Our company will assist you in making your financial plans. (当社はあなたの生活設計のお手伝いいたします)
1人で外出したい。 The company is developing devices that will assist people with visual impairments when they go out. （その会社は視覚障碍者の外出を助ける機器の開発に取り組んでいます) ※ device「装置、機器」 visual「視覚の」 impairment「障碍(障害)」 go out「外出する」
「助ける」|「succor」は困っている人を救援
succor は（困っている人を）救援することを表すときに使われる語。
The NPO plays a central role in succoring the needy in the area. （そのNPOは地域の困っている人の救済に中心的役割を果たしています）
宿敵に。 The warlord provided an enemy with succor. (その戦国大名は敵に塩を送ったのでした) ※ warlord「戦国大名」 provide … with succor「～に援助を提供する←塩を送る」
困ったとき。 When she was in trouble, books were her chief succor. (困ったときは本が彼女の主な助けでした）
