「困らせる」|「disturb」「interrupt」の違いと使い方
人の邪魔をするとき、平穏を乱したり、会話の中断もある。英語の言い方を覚えておきましょう。
「困らせる」|「disturb」は平穏を乱す
disturb は人の活動中に邪魔することをいうが、平穏を乱す場合に使われる語。
ご近所迷惑がいる。 We are disturbed by the noise from neighboring houses on weekends. （週末、近隣の騒音に悩まされています）
近所の火事。 My sleep was disturbed last night by the siren of a fire engine. （昨晩は消防車のサイレンで眠りを妨げられました） ※ siren「サイレン」 fire engine「消防車」
リビングでの勉強に必要なものは集中できる環境。 The TV in the living room is disturbing me and I can’t concentrate on studying. （リビングのテレビの音が邪魔で勉強に集中できません） ※ concentrate on …「～に集中する」
始業前の仕事。 If I go to the office early in the morning, I can concentrate on my work without anyone disturbing me. （早朝出勤だと誰にも邪魔されずに仕事に集中できます）
「困らせる」|「interrupt」は会話を中断
interrupt は disturb 同様人の活動中に邪魔することを言うが、会話を中断する場合に好まれて使われる語。
状況把握ができない人。 He always interrupts others when they are talking. （彼はいつも人の話の腰を折ります）
国権の最高機関でもときどきあります。 The chairman interrupted his question and went ahead with the vote. （議長は彼の質問を遮って採決を強行しました） ※ interrupt は「すでに話をしているのを遮る」の意味。「質問しようとするのを遮る」場合は stop a person from asking a question という。
北国の冬。 The flow of traffic was interrupted by the heavy snow. （豪雪のため交通は遮断されました）
携帯・スマホのない時代の一場面。 I’m sorry to interrupt you, but there is a phone call for you. （お話し中申し訳ありませんが、お電話がかかってきております）
