「機会」|「chance」「opportunity」「occasion」の違いと使い方

日本語でつい口からでるのは「機会」という言葉よりも「チャンス」というカタカナの方が多いかもしれない。

「機会」というよりは「チャンス」を英語で言うとき、どう言葉を使い分けるか覚えておこう。

 

「機会」|「chance」は偶然の好機

「chance」はしばしば偶然の好機を意味し、好機再来の有無を意識する際に好まれて使う語。

「chance」と「opportunity」のどちらも使えることがある。

 

受験雑誌に書いてある言葉。

The summer vacation is a good chance to catch up with the subjects you have found difficult.

「夏休みは不得意科目を挽回するチャンスです」

※ catch up with …「~に追いつく」

 

コーチが選手にいう言葉。

This competition is a good chance to test your swimming skills.

「この大会は泳ぎの腕前を試すいい機会だ」

 

天気予報で、

There’s little chance of rain.

「雨の降る確率はほとんどありません」

 

こんな機会もあるでしょう。

This international conference is the chance of a lifetime.

This international conference is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

「この国際会議は一生に一度のチャンスだ」

 

「機会」|「opportunity」はややかたい語

「opportunity」はややかたい表現で、機会が何度か訪れることを前提としたり機会の質を意識するときに好まれて使う語。

「opportunity」と「chance」のどちらも使えることがある。

 

地方の首長がよく言います。

In order to promote economic activity outside the major cities, we must create employment opportunities for young people there as quickly as possible.

「大都市以外の地方経済を活性化するためには、若者の雇用の受け皿作りが急務です」

※ create employment opportunities「雇用機会の創設」

※ as quickly as possible「少しでもはやく」

 

人に会ってお礼をいうとき、

It is a great pleasure to have this opportunity to speak to you.

「お話しする機会をいただいて大変うれしく思います」

 

後悔先に立たず。

With hindsight, it’s clear that that was my last opportunity.

「あとから考えてみると、あの時が最後のチャンスだった」

※ hindsight「後知恵」

※ … my last chance も可。

 

困った人。

He drinks whenever there’s an opportunity.

「彼は機会があれば酒をのんでいます」

※ … whenever he gets the chance とも言える。

 

「機会」|「occasion」は具体的な機会や時

「occasion」はややかたい語で、個々の具体的な機会や時を意識するときに好まれて使う語。

「occasion」は機会の頻度や回数を問題にするときに使われるが、この意味では「chance」は用いられない。

「何度かの機会」というとき several occasions とはいうが、several chances とは言わない。

 

パーティーでは、

Let us hear a tune more suited to this happy occasion.

「もっとこの楽しい場に合う曲を聞きたいですね」

 

緊張の場面はこんな時。

That was the first time for the bride’s father to say a few words by way of greeting on a formal occasion.

「花嫁の父が改まった席で挨拶を述べるのは初めてのことだった」

 

The tea ceremony master thinks of every occasion of meeting a person as the invaluable experience of a lifetime.

「そのお茶の先生はすべての出会いを一期一会と思って大切にしています」

※ tea ceremony master「お茶の先生」

※ invaluable「価値の測れない」

※ experience of a lifetime「生涯の経験」

カタカナで「チャンス」、「機会」を表す「chance」「opportunity」「occasion」は次のようになる。

「機会」|「chance」は偶然の好機

「機会」|「opportunity」はややかたい語  chance と opportunity は入れ替えがきくことが多い。
