日本語の「能力」を表す英語はいくつかある。基本的な単語の意味の違いを確認しよう。例文で覚えるとその違いは理解しやすい。
「能力」｜「ability」は身体・精神的な実際の能力
「ability」は身体・精神的な実際の能力を表す一般的な語。
The manager of the baseball team has the ability to understand the whole picture from a small piece of information.
「その野球チームの監督は一を聞いて十を知る能力を持っている」
※ understand the whole picture from a small piece of information
「小さな情報から全体像がわかる」→「一を聞いて十を知る」
Mr. Suzuki has the ability to be a leader.
「スズキ氏はリーダーの器だ」
「能力」｜「capability」は多大な知識・技能を要する能力
「capability」は多大な知識・能力を要する事柄についての能力のことをいう。特に軍事的な内容を表すときにこの語が好まれる。
Possession of nuclear capability is a potential threat to the world.
「核(能力)の保有は世界に対する潜在的な脅威になります」
※ a potential threat「潜在的な脅威」

「能力」｜「capacity」は潜在的な受容能力
「capacity」は潜在的な受容能力をいう。

「skill」はある事柄をなすのに必要とされる特殊な技能や技術をいう。

There are a lot of people who have become thoroughly skilled in an art in Japan.
「一芸に秀でている人が日本にはたくさんいる」
「能力」｜「talent」は芸術的な生まれつきの才能
「talent」は生まれつきの才能で、特に芸術的な才能をいう。
The pianist had a natural talent for music.
「そのピアニストは生まれつき音楽の才能があった」
Though she was conceited about her talent at the violin, the girl failed in the preliminaries of the competition.

「才能」｜「gift」は生来の才能
「gift」は生まれつきの才能で、どちらかというと書き言葉で「生来の」という含意が強い語である。
