「習慣」｜「habit」「custom」「practice」の違いと使い方
「習慣」には個人の「習慣や癖」、社会的・文化的な「慣習・慣例」、さらに何かの理由でやっている「習慣」もある。英語の言い方を覚えておきましょう。
「習慣」｜「habit」は個人の無意識的な慣習や癖
habit は主に個人による無意識的な慣習や癖を表すときに使われる語。
habit はしばしばやめ難いことを暗示し、否定的な文脈で使われることも多い語。
タガが外れた人。
He has gotten into the bad habit of stopping for a drink at several bars in succession after retirement. （退職後、彼ははしご酒をするという悪習が身についてしまいました）
※ in succession「連続して」
よく見られる動作。
Taro has a habit of scratching his head when he gets embarrassed. （タローは照れくさいとき頭をかく癖があります）
考え中に、
The famous detective has a peculiar habit of patting his forehead when lost in thought. （その有名な探偵は考え込むと額をたたく一風変わった癖があります）
※ peculiar「奇妙な、一風変わった」 lost in thought「考え込む」
情緒不安定か？
The child is in the habit of biting his nails whenever he feels uneasy. （その子は不安になると爪をかじる癖があります）
※ bite「かじる」 feel uneasy「不安になる」
「習慣」｜「custom」は社会的、文化的な慣習や慣例
custom は長期に渡る社会的、文化的な慣習・慣例を表すときに使われる語。
custom はしばしば具体的な国、地域、集団を表す形容詞と使われる。
このような家がまだまだたくさんあります。
My husband is from an old family which has lots of ceremonious customs. （夫の実家は旧家で堅苦しいしきたりがたくさんあります）
※ old family「旧家」 ceremonious customs「堅苦しいしきたり」
西洋には上座と下座の概念はないのですが、
According to Japanese custom, a guest is given the seat at the place of honor. （日本の風習ではお客様は上座に座っていただくのです）
※ the seat of the place of honor「上座」
紅白はめでたい。
According to Japanese custom, the combination of red and white is used for celebration. （紅白の組み合わせは日本ではお祝い事を表します）
※ celebration「祝うこと」
「習慣」｜「practice」は何かの理由で習慣的にやっていること
practice はすこしかたい感じのする語で、何らかの理由で習慣的にやっていることを表すときに使われる語。
practice は仕事や社会的、宗教的な事柄について使われることが多いが、custom とは違って自由意志で選択が可能である。
かつては寿(ことぶき)退社と言われましたが、
Most firms have stopped the practice of forcing women to resign when they get married. （ほとんどの企業は女性に結婚退職を強要するしきたりをやめました）
※ force「強要する」 resign「退職する」
ある土地では、
It’s not the practice in the country for men to wear long hair. （その国では男性は長髪にはしません）
※ wear long hair「長髪にする」
かつてはアルコールを支給したこともあった。
The Navy of the country has abandoned the practice of serving rum to the men. （その国の海軍は兵士にラム酒を出す習慣をやめました）
※ abandon「やめる」 rum「ラム酒」 men「兵士」
