「調べる」｜「examine」「check」「research」「investigate」の違いと使い方
日本語の「調べる」は様々な場面で使われる語。
日本語の「調べる」は、必要な知識を得るため「あれこれ見聞きしたり、調査したり、研究したり」することを表す語。
英語の「調べる」を意味する語の使い分けを覚えておこう。
「調べる」｜「examine」は専門家が徹底的に調べること
「examine」は主に専門家が物、人、事についてその状況、事実、性質、原因などを注意深く徹底的に調べることを表す語。
「examine」という語はかたい響きがあるので日常英語では have a look や take a look を使うことが多い。
医療現場も忙しい。
After examining the outpatients, the doctors have a look at the inpatients.
「外来患者の診察後、医師たちは入院患者を診るのです」

強風に耐えられるか？
It’s necessary to examine the strength of the glass.

「調べる」｜「check」は物や人の状態の確認
「check」は物や人を満足な状態か、安全な状態かどうか、あるいは間違いがないかを確認するために調べること。
ドライブの前に、
I had the wheels and the suspension checked at the same time as having tires changed at the garage.
「その整備工場でタイヤを交換するとき同時に足回りを点検してもらいました」
先生が生徒に言います。

「調べる」｜「research」は発見のための研究
「research」は新事実や自然の法則を発見するために注意深く詳細に研究すること。
オンラインの取引は注意。
We have to research the seller’s credibility before buying something at an e-store.
「ネット上のお店で何かを買うときは、その前に売り手の信頼性を調べるべきです」

研究者は、
He devoted all his energies to his research to develop a new type of battery.

「調べる」｜「investigate」は事実関係、関りを調べる
「investigate」は事件、可能性、主張などの事実関係や、事件への関りを疑って人や物を注意深く調べるときに使う語。
「investigate」はかたい響きがある語なので、日常英語では look into … を使うことが多い。
報道でよく使われる表現。
The police are investigating the cause of the accident.
「警察はその事故の原因を調査中である」
