「呼び寄せる」｜「call」「invite」「summon」の違いと使い方
手紙や電話で人を「呼ぶ」こともあり、丁重に「招待」することもあり、権威で「呼び出す」こともある。英語の言い方を覚えておきましょう。
「呼び寄せる」｜「call」は手紙や電話で人に来ることを要求
call は人に手紙や電話である場所に来ることを要求することを表すときに使われる基本的な語。
呼び入れ。 The president called his secretary into his room. (社長は秘書を室内に呼び入れました)
緊急時。 When our grandfather fainted, we called an ambulance. (うちの祖父が気絶したとき私たちは救急車を呼びました)
山好きの人の言い分。 The mountain is calling me. (山が私を呼んでいるのです)
危機管理。 When the burglar broke into your house, what you should have done is call the police. (強盗があなたの家に押し入った時、すべきことは警察を呼ぶことでした) ※ burglar「強盗」 break into「押し入る」 what you should have done「あなたがすべきだったこと」
「呼び寄せる」｜「invite」は出席を丁重に求める
invite は人にお客または参加者として出席を丁重に求めるときに使われる語。
丁重さが必要。 The former students invited their old teacher to their school reunion. (教え子たちは同窓会に恩師を招きました) ※ former students「教え子」
招かれたときに言います。 It is very kind of you to invite us to the party. (パーティーにお招きいただき大変ありがとうございます) ※ 帰り際に言う場合は、It was very kind of you … と過去形にする。
困った人。 He came to her birthday party without being invited. (彼は招待もされなていないのに彼女の誕生パーティーに押しかけてきました)
危機管理の一環、注意が必要。 I suspect that our clients invited us because they expect something from us. (お得意様からの招待には何か思惑があるのではないかと思います) ※ I suspect that「～ではないか思う、(危険・陰謀などを)うすうす感じる」
「呼び寄せる」｜「summon」は権威や権力による呼び出し
summon は権威または権力によって呼び出すことを表すときに使われる語。
検察側の証人として。 The old lady was summoned as a witness. (老婦人は証人として出頭するよう命じられました) ※ witness「証人」(「目撃者」の意味もある)
航空会社が関わる件で実際にあったこと。 In the budget committee of the House of Representatives, the company president at the heart of the controversy was summoned as a witness. (衆議院の予算委員会では渦中の社長の証人喚問が行われた) ※ the budget committee「予算委員会」 the House of Representatives「衆議院」 at the hear of the controversy「渦中の」
対策チーム結成。 All the parties concerned were summoned together. (関係者一同が呼び集められました) ※ parties concerned「関係者」
上司から呼び出し。 The section chief was summoned before the director this morning. (今朝、課長が部長に呼びつけられました) ※ section chief「課長」 director (of a department)「部長」
