「精神」｜「brain」「intelligence」の違いと使い方
brain を複数形にして知力を強調できる。intelligence は人間だけのものではない。英語の言い方を覚えておきましょう。
「精神」｜「brain」は知力を強調
brain はしばしば複数形で intellect（精神の考える力を表す語） 以上に知力を強調するときに使われる語。
天才的な子。 It can be said that the girl has plenty of brains. （その女の子はとても頭がよいと言える） ※ brains（複数形に注意）
難しい仕事。 This job requires a lot of brains. （この仕事はかなり頭のいる仕事です） ※ require「必要とする」 brains（複数形に注意）
複雑な仕事。 What is needed to solve this problem is to use your brains a little more. （この問題を解決するのに必要なことは、もう少し頭を使うことです） ※ solve「解決する」 problem（問題） brains（複数形に注意）
ことわざ：頭が大事。 The bigger the biceps, the smaller the brain. （大男、総身に知恵が回りかね） ※ biceps「筋肉のたくましさ→大男」 the + 比較級、the + 比較級「～であればあるほどますます…」 別表現：He has more brawn than brain, you know. (彼は頭よりも筋肉を多く持っているね)のような言い方も可。 brawn「筋肉」
「精神」｜「intelligence」は素早く理解し学習する能力
intelligence は人や動物の素早く理解し学習する能力を表す。
人間の友達。 Dolphins are believed to have quite high intelligence. (イルカは知能がかなり高いと言われています)
友達ではないが… The crow’s intelligence level is quite high. (カラスの知能の高さは相当なものです)
EQも大事です。 High IQ doesn’t necessarily mean high academic achievement. (知能指数が高いからといって勉強ができるとは限りません。 ※ IQ = intelligence quotient EQ = Emotional Intelligence Quotient「心の知能指数」
飛び級の子。 That child has the intelligence of a college student. (あの子は大学生なみの知能を持っています)
