「しるし」｜「symptom」「indication」の違いと使い方
病気や混乱の「しるし」もあれば、言葉や身振りで表す「しるし」もある。英語の言い方を覚えておきましょう。
「しるし」｜「symptom」は病気・混乱が認識できるしるし
symptom は病気や混乱の存在が外面に認識できることを表すときに使われる語。
潜伏期間。 I didn’t notice any symptoms myself. (自覚症状は全くありませんでした) ※「潜伏期間」は the incubation time あるいは the incubation period などという。
高熱。 A high fever is an early symptom of pneumonia. (高熱は肺炎の前兆です) ※ a high fever「高熱」 early symptom「前兆」 pneumonia「肺炎」
悪化。 Though he was hospitalized, his symptoms grew even worse. (入院したのに彼の症状はなお悪くなりました) ※ be hospitalized「入院する」 grow worse「悪化する」
脱水症状。 The patient showed symptoms of dehydration. (その患者は脱水症状を呈しました) ※dehydration「脱水」
社会不安。 A rising crime rate is one of the symptoms of social unrest. (犯罪率の上昇は社会不安の兆候の一つです) ※ crime rate「犯罪率」 social unrest「社会不安」
「しるし」｜「indication」はあることを示すしるし・言葉・身振り
indication はあることを示す、しるし・言葉・身振りを表すときに使われる語。
いきなり転職。 My colleague never gave me the slightest indication that he was quitting the company for another job. (同僚は転職しようとしていることをおくびにも出しませんでした) ※ quit「辞める」
捜査会議で。 There are indications that the suspect stopped by the restaurant. (そのレストランに容疑者が立ち寄った形跡があります) ※ stop by「立ち寄る」
海外経験が原動力。 The young samurai warrior saw indications of the dawn of a new age in that country. (その若い侍はその国で新しい時代の息吹にふれたのでした) ※ dawn「夜明け」
一揆の前夜。 Up to that point there was no indication that the peasants would revolt. (その時まで百姓が蜂起する気配はありませんでした) ※ peasant「百姓」 revolt「反乱・一揆を起こす」
